The phlegmatic British - ie most of us - are very bad at complaining. Eat a rotten meal at a rotten restaurant and we tend to pay through the nose and smile. We complain about it to one another, of course, but rarely face up to those who have caused us distress and/or financial loss. Well it doesn't have to be like that. There are methods of dealing with public bodies that fall out of line and methods of taking on errant plumbers. Complaining effectively does not mean you have to declare war. It is sometimes a more intelligent approach to do some straight talking with your adversary - jaw-jaw always being a great deal better than war war.
